Rapid City, South Dakota
Area attractions in Rapid City:
Located in the shadow of Mt. Rushmore, it is only appropriate that Rapid City, "The City of Presidents", honor our history by displaying life-size bronze statues of past presidents on major street corners in the historic downtown area. To date over two dozen president's statues are displayed. A nice leisurely walk along the four x two block area is delightful viewing, or the statues can be enjoyed as you drive in a car. The Prairie Edge store and gallery showcases Native American art & culture and is located at the corner of 6th and Main Street.
The Journey Museum offers a view of 2.5 billion years of Black Hills history, from the upheaval that formed the area to the story of the shaping of the Western Great Plains, its history and it’s people. Dinosaur Park, overlooking Rapid City, is a fun experience for the family, as kids and adults alike can sit on and stand by concrete, life-size replicas of dinosaurs who once inhabited this area, and it’s free!
Area restaurants offer everything from casual dining to international cuisine. Chuck-wagon dinners and musical shows are fun for the whole family. Rapid City is the home of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T) campus, as well as the National American University (NAU). Golf is available on public and private outstanding courses, and trout fishing is easily accessible at Canyon Lake and area creeks.
Rapid City boasts that it is within an hour-and-a-half drive, with spectacular scenery, to explore five national parks: Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, and the scenic Badlands. The city’s theme is, “Unpack in Rapid City. Unwind in the Black Hills”. You are invited!
